Third Time’s a Charm - Argentina Strengthens Its Presence

The diverse collections from Argentine’s Designers translated well at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York, making
the talent coming out of Argentina something to really look out for.

In the past decade, Argentina’s fashion industry has become a powerhouse for their economy, and in the third year in a
row, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was privileged to showcase the top Argentine talent behind the boom.

The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade selected its finalists based on a panel of fashion
editors and stylists who judge on creativity, career progress, and capability to sell well in an international market. The
six designers this year were Cardon, Cora Groppo, Daniela Sartori, Desiderata, Mariana Dappiano and Min Agostini.
Cardon took on a western ranch motif, with ponchos and vests in goat suede, hand-crafted crocheted long dresses
and skirts, with plenty of fringe detail, all in rustic colors. Cora Groopo exhibited asymmetrical neckline and hemlines in
monochromatic schemes that added more interest with contrasting fabrics of satin and leather. Daniella Sartori kept
her collection in khaki, cream, white and black in the form of functional pieces such a pair of well fit, black wide leg
trousers, and a dreamy summer dress in white linen. Desiderata's look for SS 12 was simple and proved to be the
most commercial of the bunch, with matching blazers and pants, floral print standing alone or topped with a camel
trench, or camel tone by itself in the form of a jumpsuit. Mariana Dappiano was the one of the stars of the show with acreative collection that really stood out among her counterparts. Dappiano featured a beautiful concoction of color with oranges, teal, lime greens, and baby blues that at times created striking block formations on her ensembles, or in the form of artistic prints. Min Agostini also prevailed in the group of six with architectural satin dresses, skirts, tops and a cape in green, yellow, pink, and orange, that were given volume and structure in dramatic silhouettes.

Argentina earned its respect in the fashion world and it is only emerging. This country’s talent is something to watch out for, and MBFW looks forward to do just that next season.
