Jewelry designer Heidi Gardner dives into commercial waters for spring '14 and produces an exquisitely crafted collection.
At the Highline Loft in New York City, Heidi Gardner previewed her spring/summer 2014 collection entitled Waterland. And we must say the looks washed in like a wave of wonder both figuratively and literally. Accessories came in the form of sea creatures and were a refreshing departure from the signature skull heads that mark Gardner’s previous collections. During our interview with the designer, she said the new direction was deliberate, and that she aimed to commercialize her designs while remaining true to the brands DNA. “I wanted to stay true to my delicate meets dangerous aesthetic,” said the petite blonde with a smile. “And who doesn’t love the ocean?”What hasn’t changed with this new collection is Gardner’s exquisite craftsmanship. Perhaps what is most beautiful about her new offering is how literal oceanic inspiration takes form. Stingrays shape statement arm cuffs, puffer fish work as perfect earring studs and shark teeth adorn a long chain necklace. Each piece is dangerous indeed, but also gorgeously delicate. For spring ’14, Gardner used the finest materials land has to offer including sterling silver, brass, 18K gold plating, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, moonstones and black and white pearls. Gardner joked that she remains partial to skulls, but feels she still was able to create a fantasy world, just a different type. “I wanted to take the beauty of the ocean and put it on land. To create a wonderland.”
