Dear Vanessa,

I'm going to a New Year's party. What should I wear?

For a New Year's party, the key word to remember is: sparkle. New Year's is a time for celebration, so your attire should communicate that. That being said, the color dress code is black, silver and gold.

Wear black fitted pants. Tell your boyfriend that he can wear jeans as long as they are dark and his shirt is black or dark gray. New Year's is a time to be dressy!

After the boring black pants are on, the fun can begin. So which do you like better: gold or silver? Probably the best way to decide what direction to sparkle in is to pick the second key part of your outfit: a top.

Here are some basic top combinations:

A black undershirt topped off with a black shrug that sparkles.

A black top embroidered with silver or gold beads. But remember, if you wear a shirt that has a lot of detail at the neckline, opt for earrings instead of a necklace.

A basic black turtleneck or any other basic black top with a bold belt in metallic gold or silver hung around your waist. A sash would work as well.

A polished black tank with pretty gold or silver beads draped over it.

It is OK to wear a short sleeved shirt; just be sure that to and from the party you wear a pea coat rather than a ski jacket. If you want to be super fabulous, wear a luxurious wrap. To see what a wrap looks like, check out OldNavy.com. They have one in faux fur. Also, add a broach to the wrap.

Now that the outfit is taken care of, it is time to address the shoes. For a New Year's party, wear high heels please! Open-toed stilettos are perfectly appropriate for New Year's. The trick is wearing a pair of high heels that are in gold or silver or have jewels on them. You get to pick!

For accessories, either wear a huge, bold pair of earrings that will brighten up your whole face or a striking necklace that brings more attention to your outfit. Of course, which ever option you choose, it should be in gold or silver and crying out for attention.

Here are some Wal-Mart look-a-likes that could help you dazzle:(pictures)
