Fashion Fix

It may seem inappropriate to be talking about how students carry their books to classes, since finals are rolling around, but I think it important for students to reconsider their Jansport backpacks before the new semester begins.
It's so sad when I see a girl in a cute outfit, and her look is sabotaged by a huge backpack she is hauling behind her. The worst scenario is she is wearing her backpack with high heels. I always ask myself, 'Did she just take a hike in the mountains wearing those stilettos?'
A heavy backpack only pushes your weight forward so you are prone to walk around like Quasimodo from "The Hunchback of Notre Dome."
I still cringe when I look back at my high school years when I too, was guilty of assuming my backpack wasn't a visible part of my outfit, even though it was twice as big as I was and a "road-sign yellow" color.
Instead of a backpack, opt for an over-the-shoulder tote. Totes come in all different styles depending on one's personal taste. I would recommend a funky colored leather tote with character giving details such as buckles, charms or pockets.
If you can afford a nice bag (I must admit I am a little bitter), check out nordstrom.com. I was especially impressed with the DKNY line on that site.
For those who are in the "broke college student" category as I am, my $25 book bag is a testament that cost isn't in proportion to style. Check out discount stores such as Ross, where affordable good designer (and non-designer) bags can be found. I'll even give Vera Bradley an okay, though I sometimes wonder if all these girls are planning to go on a picnic with Grandma. The important thing is that you absolutely love whatever bag you buy, and that it is practical for your wardrobe, because, remember, it is going to be attached to your hip--literally--all next year.
And whatever you do, please don't make the mistake of combining a purse with your tote. That can look tackier than wearing a backpack with high heels! You could have a beautiful Dior purse with a classy Limited tote, but wear them over the same shoulder and you will just look like you are packing for an overnight stay.
I'm sure most of your book bags have a little extra room for a cosmetic bag! Buy one to keep your book bag organized and your look put together. I'm sure you can squeeze a little extra room in your bag for your car keys and cell phone. If I am wrong about having enough room in your present bag to go without your clashing purse, I guess that is something to consider when buying your new tote for next semester.
