Georgia College & State University crowned the annual Homecoming King and Queen Feb. 5 at the Centennial Center after the Augusta State double header.

Bret Benson was crowned King and Tracy Haynes was named Queen.

Benson, a senior with a double major in Mass Communication and Rhetoric, described what he thought the moment he won.

"I just thought, 'we finally did it.' I ran last year and got second runner up," Benson said.

Benson, a member of APA and GC&SU's SGA, gave credit to GC&SU's student goverment, who tallied the votes, and to all the friends who helped him.

"I had a lot of friends that helped me with everything, so I really feel that it was a group win because I really couldn't have put all that stuff together. I had people staying up until 3 a.m. morning making t-shirts."

Haynes, the crowned queen, had a similar statement about her win.

"The members of my sorority (Alpha Delta Phi) were the ones campaigning and they worked really hard for me. They donated a lot of time and effort and that means a lot to me."

Haynes is a senior majoring in Early Childhood Education. Although she was a Kappa Alpha representative for court, she originally represented her sorority Alpha Delta Phi.

"Some of the girls from my sorority went out and chalked my name to campaign for me and were unaware of that there was no campaigning allowed till the 31st. It was an honest mistake," said Haynes.

The misunderstanding led to the disqualification of Alpha Delta Phi.

"Fortunately, my boyfriend is a Kappa Alpha and his fraternity decided to let me represent them," Haynes explained.

Although Alpha Delta Phi was not able to be represented this year, they have represented the Homecoming Queen for the last six years.

John Wright, President Pro Tempore of the SGA, explained that each organization is allowed one male nominee and one female nominee.

Wright said voter turn out this year was higher than average. He also said there was a marked increase in the number of nominees.

"Miss GC&SU has been a long standing tradition in our sorority and me winning this is something we are all very proud of."

First runner-up Christine Head, representative of Phi Mu, said she was happy for her follow contestants.

"It was a little overwhelming seeing my name everywhere, but it was an honor to represent Phi Mu." Head also adds, "I'm really good friends with Bret so I'm happy to see him win."

Haynes said the Homecoming tradition is important.

"The last week we were (Alpha Delta Phi) all together for this one thing and it strengthened our sisterhood," Haynes said.

Chandler Wall, runner-up for Mr. GC&SU, said he was honored with his placing. Has said he has his own reasons for thinking this tradition is important.

"As a student ambassador, it is neat to show on tours what a tight knit community we are," said Wall. "That was really evident during Homecoming week."
